principles of equilibrium was developed in collaboration with winemaker, steve crawford (frederick stevenson) for the exhibition "fortified".
when a settled system is disturbed, it will adjust to diminish the change that has been made to it.
winemaking is a creative process: it involves a balancing act of variables. one can try and force their will against the season, the grapes, wines, or marketplace - but each facet has its own thoughts on that.
with harvest being only once a year, the refinements in process, application and judgment will have to wait until next year for their implementation. but there is no telling that the next season will be in any way the same, thus providing a new set of variables — both positive and negative. do these variables act independently or cohesively? as a result, changes need to be gradual and slow, and it takes time to see their progress.
much like winemaking, design is a balancing act of material, form and process seeing how each one can interact and coincide.
principles of equilibrium is a sculptural metaphor that highlights the balance and interventions of the creative process. critical thinking and problem-solving are at the heart of all creative endeavours, as decisions and actions are made that effect the course and outcomes of each project.
to create you need to implement. to implement you need to visualise. to visualise you need to observe.
